To celebrate 50 episodes, Inflow flips the format: instead of interviewing a guest, hosts Joe Arlotto and Dr. Jeff sit down to interview each other. Between them they bring over 60 combined years of aquatic animal life support systems experience — Joe's path runs through Brookfield Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, San Diego Zoo, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, while Dr. Jeff's began in October 1989 at Walt Disney World's The Living Seas before moving through Walt Disney Imagineering and independent LSS consulting.

But I was… It was all about trying to document some of our history and, and

that's where it began, and it was riding on that bus to Pittsburgh Zoo and, and

And, and, uh, you know, the, the interesting thing about the history

is that, and now, of course, things were done obviously way back when

probably that, that I didn't know about, but for me, it was a very

I mean, when I started, th- there were people that you could, that I

dealt with that you could arguably say started LSS, or when they started

designing these systems, there was kind of, there, there was no LSS.

first crossed and we met in the early '90s, somewhere around 1992.

And, but tell me a little bit more about prior to the LSS

I know you were in the Navy, but, but, uh, talk a little bit about growing up.

And, um, it got me thinking a little bit when we decided to do this, that

we know each other very well in an LSS sense, but maybe not before that.

And, and that goes for many of the people that I know in LSS.

So this'll be interesting to talk a little bit about our histories.

But yeah, I, I find when I was thinking about this, it's fascinating

to me because many of our guests have had something early on that told

them they wanted to be involved in oceans, marine life, LSS, aquariums.

And for me, I have to say, there wasn't really, I didn't really grow up like that.

I, I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, Silver Spring, Maryland.

I'm a Maryland boy, you know, sort of classic Irish Italian,

big family, Catholic family.

Grew up public school kid, running around the neighborhood playing sports, you

know, causing trouble, breaking into, you know, swimming pools at midnight

and, and going swimming with my friends.

I mean, sort of your general low-level criminal background, you know?

But you did get a start in swimming pools that way.

So maybe that's what it all was.

You know, in high school I kind of had a knack for math and science and, and,

uh, went to college in Boston at Tufts University, got a, a Navy ROTC scholarship

through, uh, I cross-town enrolled at, at MIT 'cause they, they had the,

uh, the Navy ROTC, um, uh, unit there.

And, uh, I studied engineering, mechanical engineering.

I was taking Navy classes and doing Navy training.

You know, I, I wanted to go in the Navy really just because I was

super patriotic and, and wanted to have kind of an adventure.

And so I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, went into the Navy,

was stationed various places, Newport, Rhode Island, Charleston, South Carolina,

00:05:49
eventually Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

I was on a, I was on a frigate, first the USS Garcia FF 1040 in

00:05:58
Charleston, and then USS Whipple FF 1062, old steam plants, you know.

And I, I was learned how to run a, a steam plant on the, on the ship.

Joe, this is fascinating because I'm finding even within SeaWorld and my

organization that a lot of people that have a Navy background, whether

it's in the steam plant or the engine room or on a sub which has to have a,

a high level of life support, all of those disciplines in the mechanical-

field certainly played into what became your LSS career, would you say?

Definitely.

Ve- very good insight there.

There are two things I think that I learned in the Navy that

I brought into my LSS career.

One was I was not afraid of small spaces and plant rooms and loud

machinery, and it just didn't, it just didn't bother me, you know?

And so, you know, when you first get into LSS and, and you see those big,

those big, uh, equipment rooms, it can be intimidating, but for me it was not.

The other thing that I learned in the Navy really was managing people.

I mean, I was an officer.

I was a lieutenant.

And I had to manage equipment, but I had to manage people managing that equipment.

And so, you know, very similar to when I started in LSS, I had a team a- and I

had a system, and I had to manage those things, manage the maintenance, manage my

team, and, um, I had a lot of experience in, in that in, in, in the Navy.

To follow up on that, Joe, I, I, what I hear in the military in general and

in certainly in the Navy and on a ship or a submarine, chain of command is

really an important thing, I think.

Is that correct?

Oh, yeah, of course.

Chain of command is everything.

Uh, you, you talk to your direct superior, and you also talk to the

person directly below you in rank, and delegation is the key, right?

My days in the Navy were so busy, so busy that I thought when I started I could

do it all myself, but you just can't.

You have to delegate to your team, and that's the key to being a,

a naval officer, is delegation.

Not unlike what we have in the aquarium and zoo world with regard to, um, the

way we, we work with our habitats, work with the other teams, work within

our LSS group or water quality team.

There's a, certainly there's a hierarchy.

It's a little bit looser maybe in an- Right … aquarium world, but it still

exists, and that communication up and down the chain's very important.

I remember a funny story.

I was start, I had started working at Brookfield Zoo, and we were called in

because we had to do a procedure on a dolphin, and the LSS, the LSS team was

called in because we had to arrange the valving so that the med pool could be

isolated and then drained and filled.

So we were in, and, and the guys that I was working with, Greg and Marty, they

were like, "Man, this stinks. It's 8:00 at night. We got called in." And I was

thinking to myself, this is great because, I mean, I never got this in the Navy.

I, you didn't get overtime in the Navy, right?

I said, "This is awesome 'cause I'm getting paid for it.

I'm gonna be home by 10:00, so I'm gonna get a good night's sleep." And it's not

like I'm on a ship that's rocking around in, in, in heavy weather, you know?

So it was, for me, the Navy made the LSS really m- much easier,

and, uh, I wasn't intimidated by the people or by the equipment.

E- exactly, and I was wondering on that d- specific example, my mind just went

to med floors and, and lifting med floor.

Did you happen to have that technology, uh, back at the zoo?

No, we didn't.

We had, back at Brookfield, we had three back pools that were connected to the

main show pool, and the middle back pool was the med pool that you could

put the, the watertight gates in, right?

And then it had a shelf, a built-in shelf, so there was a s- you could have a high

water level, then you could get in there, you could hold onto the dolphin, put him

on the shelf, which was still underwater, and then drain the system, so now you

were standing, you were standing in a place where you could work on the dolphin.

He was on the shelf, and the water could be drained out.

But I know what you're getting at.

It's, it's, at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi we had those special floors.

That's right, and it, so it required very little, uh, in the way of

adjusting water level because you can move the floor, right?

You don't have to worry about dropping the pool.

And what you're getting at there, in case people don't know, we had some

very seriously big holding pools that had pneumatically… Right?

They were pneumatically operated floors that would just, that would just rise.

And hydrostatic pressure, uh, uh, Joe, because water

actually was the, the source.

So yeah, I mean, we've, we, we've come a long way.

But, uh, but the Navy for me w- was a great experience.

I, I was over in the Persian Gulf in '90, '91 for Desert Storm,

and I'm proud of, of being there.

It was a, a long, long six, seven months.

But, um, in '91 I got out of the Navy, and interestingly enough, I

wanted more adventure, so I, I…

This is something that most people don't know about me, but I, I took a trip for

a year, a backpacking trip around the world with my friend Devin, a kid that

I grew up with and went to college with, just o- one, one of my best friends.

And, um, Devin and I traveled to Australia.

We, we worked on a sheep farm there for, for several months.

We traveled through Australia.

00:12:07
We went through Malaysia, Thailand, uh, Nepal, South Africa, Zambia,

Zimbabwe, Egypt, Israel, and then on into Greece and on into Europe.

So that was a whole year, and it was a, a great trip and, and, uh, a, a nice sort

of, uh, segue from being in the military.

And then, um, and then I moved to Chicago with Devin, my friend,

'cause he had been living there.

I moved to Chicago, and I was gonna start my career as a, as an engineer.

Yeah, and I, I just think about the, on your trek through those areas,

all of the animals you must have encountered and different habitats

that you went through on your way through Africa and into Europe.

Yeah, we did.

We saw, I mean, we saw a lot.

It wasn't so much a sightseeing trip, but more of like a, a backpacking nature trip.

But, but you're right, we saw all kinds of ecosystems.

I, like I say, I wasn't really so into those things.

I was never thinking that I was gonna be working at a zoo or an aquarium.

I thought I was gonna, you know, move to Chicago and get a job for an engineering

firm and be a mechanical engineer.

It's, it's what I wanted to do.

And interestingly enough, you know, my, my friend Devin, who, uh, he actually

passed away in 2016, but, but back when I moved to Chicago in '90, I was

living with him, I was applying to a bunch of different engineering jobs,

and he walks into the living room and says, he, he was reading the Chicago

Tribune, and he goes, "There's a job opportunity here at the Brookfield Zoo.

They're hiring an engineer to run their water system, and he needs to be scuba

diver qualified." And I looked at him and I said- I don't wanna work at a zoo.

Why, why do I wanna work at a zoo? He said, "No, Brookfield Zoo's so cool.

I've been there." And he's like, "You're a scuba diver, you've done a

lot of scuba diving, and you could go diving with the dolphins, you know?"

I said, "I don't know, man. S- I, I, I don't think so." He said, "Look,

you gotta do it. The, the deadline is tonight." So I kinda rewrote my resume.

I, I doctored up my, my, uh, cover letter and, you know, there was

no email or anything then, right?

So I borrowed his car, I drove out to Brookfield.

It was probably midnight at that point, so the zoo was closed.

I handed my application to the guard at the shack and I said, "Get this to

Seven Seas, uh, it's for the job there." He's like, "Okay." I thought, "It'll

never find its way there," you know?

But I didn't care.

And the next day I get a call from John Linn, who was-- We'd had-- John

Linn was our very first guest, right?

And we worked with him at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.

We know John very well, obviously.

And, um, I got a call from John Linn, he's like, "I'm, I'm here, uh, with Enertec.

We are the, the, the en- the, the designers of the filtration system here.

I got your resume.

Let's interview you." And I went for the interview.

I didn't want the job.

I didn't think I did.

I thought it was not gonna be professional enough for me.

And, um, I got there, and the people that were interviewing me, besides John,

who was an incredibly smart, sharp guy, there was the curator of mammals, there

was the assistant director to the zoo.

All very, very sharp people.

And, um, I was impressed.

And after-- I went into the interview not wanting the job, and

I left totally wanting the job.

And I got it, and that was my first LSS job.

And Joe, I think about, uh, Desert Storm, Persian Gulf, Arabian Gulf on

the other side of the body of water.

But 30 years, essentially- From that period of time, you found yourself

back at the Arabian Gulf 30 years later, uh, on SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and

again, we crossed paths with John Linn.

So he has been a staple in and out of your 30-year car- plus career.

I mean, John, you know, he's just been a, a person that I've relied on a lot.

He taught me everything at Brookfield, and then he was available for

quest- and I had a lot of questions.

Uh, he was available for questions.

He … W- when I drove out to my second job at Albuquerque Aquarium

in '96, I stopped to see him in St.

Louis when he was living there.

I've been talking to him for years, and then got to work with him again.

It's funny you mention 30 years in the Middle East because when I was in the

Navy in the Persian Gulf, we stopped for R&R for, like, a little four-day vacation

In Dubai, and there was nothing there.

And 30 years later, I'm flying in and out of Dubai going to Abu Dhabi, and

it, obviously it looks a lot different.

Yeah, and I mean, if Dubai looked like that, imagine what Abu Dhabi

looked like at that time because- Oh, I know … you know, it was lagging

behind Dubai, um, in development.

But I, you know, on the show, um, we talk a lot about what I do and, you know, and

it's not, unless you're, you've tuned into the right show or the right few shows,

there r- there's probably listeners out there that, you know, that who's this Dr.

And, and I know I've alluded to this and, and my background is in chemistry,

but the, the point of the matter is that I'm a life support system scientist, but

you don't go to school for that, right?

That, that doesn't exist.

A- and so, uh, you know, uh, h- this is an interesting story in, in my case.

I'm in graduate school, University of Florida, finishing my PhD and

trying to get a job, uh, as a research chemist at a, at a chemical

company or a petrochemical company.

And so I, I interviewed for jobs and had job, got jobs at ExxonMobil, Dow,

DuPont, all the typical places you would think a PhD chemist would go to work.

And my PhD was in physical organic chemistry, and the physical

part was kinetics, and it was the rate of chemical reactions.

And I think about LSS and salt water and all the reactions going

on in the salt water, whether it be with ozone or something else.

It's all related to the concentration and the temperature.

And I think about our, our polar, our penguin systems, all the way up to

our tropical warmer water systems.

There's a temperature gradient there of, that's pretty vast, and there's

also different concentrations of dosing, whether that is sodium

hypochlorite or ozone or anything else we put into the water.

Uh, all of that led to a new job, and, and I was going down to the job board

in the chemistry department at UF, and there was a sorcerer apprentice Mickey

on a piece of stationery letterhead for a job at Walt Disney World in Orlando

at Epcot, and specifically to be based at what was called The Living Seas at

the time, arguably at that time, uh, the largest aquarium in the world.

A- and so I thought, "Well, gee, that's not petrochemical, that's not fertilizer,

that's not pharmaceuticals. That, that's-- What is this about?" So I went down there,

I interviewed, and, uh, got that job.

So now I have this decision to make, right?

I've got the, the traditional chemist jobs, and then I've got this one-off, and

I took the one-off And I mean, n- not to, I don't know, not to really make a big

deal out of money, but w- was the money at Disney comparable to what it would've

been, what it, it would've been at Exxon or, or one of these bigger companies?

It was the low offer, believe me.

I, I finished my, I finished my PhD on a Thursday in October, and I was

at Disney on Monday, following Monday.

They moved me down there.

But there was a big delta in salary between what I was offered at Disney

versus the other larger companies.

And, um, well, Disney was a large company, but certainly not, uh, adept

at hiring scientists or chemists.

So, um, I, I took a chance and went with it.

And was there somebody there before you?

Or like, what, uh, did you have any idea what you were gonna be doing for Disney

and The Living Seas as a PhD chemist?

Yeah, that came out in the interview actually.

And, and- Ah … that, and the very first thing we had, of course, this being

an inland closed life support system, backwash recovery, no water changes

whatsoever because of the, the sanitary sewer couldn't handle a discharge of salt.

Uh, and so nitrate became the issue, and, and denitrification

was just coming onto the stage.

And, um, so I was, I was really hired to solve that problem and, uh, lead

that effort to, uh, to do a nitrate digester process at The Living Seas.

And how long had Living Seas been in operation at that point?

Because we've, some of our guests, I mean, Paul Cooley, right?

Uh- Joel Johnson … uh, Joel Johnson talked about Living Seas.

It was, back then it was the aquarium.

That's right.

It, it opened in 1986.

And so, so Joel and Paul Cooley worked on that in the design phase

in the run-up to the 1986 opening.

So when I arrived, it was roughly three years later.

Jim Pappas was there at the time.

He was, he was just about one month, I think, from leaving to,

to, uh, take on a venture at Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi.

But I get … Long story short, it was clear to me that th- this is often

thought of as an anoxic, not truly anaerobic, but very low oxygen, li-

less than one part per million dissolved oxygen, is where a, a group of bacteria

called facultative anaerobes, which means they aren't true anaerobes.

Facultative, their ability is to, they breathe oxygen if it's around, but if you

starve them, this bacteria, o- of their oxygen, they find oxygen somewhere else.

And nitrate, the ion, negatively charged ion, is NO3.

And so it goes in there, the bacteria grabs the oxygen out of the nitrate

Uh, uh, the carbon source now that I use in our nitrate digesters is glycerin.

The sulfur needs to be replaced over time, so that's a sand filter with

sulfur in it, and a buffer because you do, uh, form some acid in this process.

And so you put some scallop shell or aragonite or calcium carbonate in
